The first generation of the rear-wheel drive from the premium roadster Mercedes-Benz SLK (with the internal factory code "R170") made its official debut at the end of April 1996 - at the international Turin Motor Show, and its appearance was preceded by two concepts of the same name.

In 2000, the car underwent a minor update, as a result of which it received minor cosmetic changes and new equipment.

The two-door lasted on the conveyor until 2004, after which it was displaced by the next generation model.

The original "release" of the Mercedes-Benz SLK-class is a compact class roadster with a folding hard top, which has the following dimensions: it measures 4011 mm in length, does not exceed 1712 mm in width, and reaches 1260 mm in height.
The wheelbase of the car is 2400 mm, and its ground clearance is 150 mm.

In the "stowed" state, the "German" weighs from 1195 to 1480 kg (depending on the level of performance).

For the Mercedes-Benz SLK of the first embodiment, only gasoline engines with distributed fuel injection are offered - these are in-line compressor "fours" with a working volume of 2.0-2.3 liters, developing 163-197 horsepower and 230-280 Nm of torque, and a V-shaped " six "3.2-liter, which generates 218 hp. and 310 Nm peak potential.

The motors work in conjunction with a 5- or 6-speed "mechanics" or 5-speed "automatic", which send the entire power reserve to the rear wheels.

The German roadster has good "driving" characteristics: it gains maximum 214-245 km / h, and exchanges the second "hundred" after 6.9-8.6 seconds.

In the combined mode, the car digests "from 9.2 to 11.1 liters of fuel for every 100 km of run.

At the heart of the "first" Mercedes-Benz SLK-class is a rear-wheel drive platform with a longitudinally placed engine and a body made with extensive use of high-strength steel.
The two-door boasts independent suspensions of both axles: in the front - MacPherson style, in the back - a multi-link layout ("in a circle" - with transverse stabilizers).

The machine is equipped with ventilated disc brakes on all wheels, supplemented by ABS and EBD, as well as a rack-and-pinion steering center with hydraulic power steering.

In the secondary market of Russia, Mercedes-Benz SLK (R170) in 2017 is offered at a price of ~ 300 thousand rubles.

Among the advantages of a compact roadster are: attractive appearance, reliable design, high-quality interior, excellent driving characteristics, powerful engines, rich equipment and much more.

But it also has disadvantages: a stiff suspension, expensive maintenance, a low level of practicality, high fuel consumption and some other points.
